Word Search

I've been searching for just the right word lately and have found myself reading the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology and the Oxford English Dictionary. My mind grows dizzy as I page back and forth between the two, tracing the origins and relationships of words that I usually just take for granted.

What prompted this (re)search? Recently I stumbled upon the concept of lectio divina, the close attention to and prayer/meditation on a single word or passage from the Bible. It's very similar, I think, to the practice of repeating a mantra of one syllable or word during meditation. I'm trying to replace some of the self-defeating words that reside in my head with more affirming ones, hence my search. (By the way, why isn't "f**k" in Chambers?)

Here's a sampling of some words I like, pieced into a series of collage vocabulary cards.

For my mom's 90th birthday I bought her a series of entomology books and now three years later she still reads them everyday and every time I visit she has me look up the origin of oh so many words. I adore your word card collages.

I've really enjoyed looking at your blog. I have only recently started a little collaging and was wondering where you got the lettering for yours?

My question exactly - why isn't f**k in that book???? I seem to meditate on that word a lot, even used it in my last session with my therapist. But isn't that the place for truth telling....
Anyway, enough about me! Your collages are just superb! Well, you had me at words, and then when I saw your graphic collages and the way you have put them together I was quite delighted. They seem so playful and irreverent. LOVE!!!

Pat, these are wonderful. I love etymologies. Have you looked at Origins, by Eric Partridge? Also, consider Blake's Proverbs of Hell. Might be an interesting read in light of what you are doing.

Your collages are gorgeous. What materials? From where?
